1. The word Dussehra is coined by two words ‘dasha’ and ‘hara’ which means ‘ten heads’ and ‘ to defeat’ and Vijayadashmi is coined by two words ‘Vijay’ and ‘Dashmi’ which means ‘ victory’ and ‘tenth day’.
2. Dussehra/Vijayadashmi is observed on the tenth day in the month of Ashwin as per the Hindu calendar and in the month of September- October as per the Gregorian calendar.
3. There are usually three stories that revolve around this day which shows the victory of good over evil. Goddess Durga killed demon Mahisasur to restore Dharma, Rama’s victory over Ravana to establish truth and justice and Arjuna’s victory over Kauravas which also showed the victory of good over evil.
4. It is also an auspicious day to start something new. A well-trained priest is called to perform the Puja as per Vedic standards.
