1. Hartalika is a combination of two words ‘harit’ and ‘aalika’ which means ‘abduction’ and ‘female friend’.
2. The day is called as Hartalika Teej because Goddess Parvati’s friend had to abduct her in order to get her married to Shiva. Goddess Parvati made a Shiva Lingam out of her hair and prayed in the name of Shiva to impress him to get married.
3. A priest is invited to do the Hartalika Teej Puja which involves Hartalika Teej Katha and Abhishekam. It is celebrated on the third day of the Lunar month of Bhadrapad.
4. The fast commences in the evening and is broken the next day. It is mandatory not to drink water during the fast.
