1. The literal meaning of Yagnopavit/Upnayan/Janeau/Poita is ‘The act of leading to’. It is the most auspicious and widely discussed samskara in ancient Sanskrit texts.
2. Traditionally, this ceremony marked the acceptance of a student by a guru and vary widely with the region as per Sanskrit texts and also known as ‘Vidyarambha’.
3. Today it is open to anyone at any age. Usually, it is between the age of 8 and 16. With this ceremony, a three-strand sacred thread of cotton is received by the child which symbolizes different things in their region. For some, it symbolizes Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh. For Tamils, it symbolizes Parvati, Lakshmi and Saraswati.
